How to Implement Twitter Cards for Squarespace Users

Hey guys..and ladies! On my post The Social Media Platforms That Made me the Most Money...So Far, I indicated that Pinterest and Instagram are my biggest money makers. However, Twitter is also in the running.  Whenever I publish a new post, Squarespace automatically tweets it.  But it always ends up looking like this:

It looks okay, but that photo describing my blog post is way  too small. And from what I know about twitter users, we tend to click on the tweets that have big pictures.  So I always tried to add a picture in my "later" tweets regarding my new post, but that takes up too many characters. If you are like me, I try to explain my post in 140 characters and include a link and include a mention....DOING TOO MUCH WITH TOO LITTLE!

So I have two solutions for this to make your twitter posts look like this instead:

Much better right?! Okay, let's do this!

Embedding the TWITTER Summary Card with Large Image - AUTO

These instructions will automatically make all of your tweets from your site post a Large Image and Summary.  This will give your twitter followers and rich photo experience and will receive more clicks to your website.

click on the image to see a larger view.

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Click on Advance.
  3. Click on Code Injection
  4. Insert the Code below in the Header Section.
  5. Insert your info. i.e. twitter name, domain.
  6. Now save it!

<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
<meta name="twitter:creator" content="@your_username">
<meta name="twitter:domain" content="">
<meta name="twitter:site" content="@your_username">

Now, to check to see if you followed the instructions right, go to the Twitter Card Validator and enter a url of any post. It should look like this if done correctly:

Then you are ready to start tweeting beautiful tweets with big pictures! YEAHHHHHH!

Alright, so what if you don't want all of your post to have large images, but only specific posts...

With these instructions you can manually make all of your tweets from your site post a Large Image and Summary. The advantage of this method is that you can customize the picture if you wanted to use a different picture from what is on your blog post. You can also edit the description!

click on the image to see a larger view

  1. In your post, add a Code block.
  2. Copy and past the code below in that window.
  3. Insert your info.  i.e. twitter name, domain.
  4. To change the image, insert the image url link of the picture you want use. (keep in mind, images for this card should be at least 280px in width, and at least 150px in height.  The image must also be less than 1MB in size.
  5. Click Apply.
<meta name="twitter:card" content="photo" />
<meta name="twitter:site" content="@your_username" />
<meta name="twitter:title" content="Your Post Title" />
<meta name="twitter:image" content="http://your_image_url.png" />
<meta name="twitter:url" content="" />
<meta name="twitter:description" content="Your Description -Cupcake oat cake sesame snaps icing cookie chocolate dragée. Cake bonbon candy cupcake jelly-o candy canes.">

So now test it in the Twitter Card Validator!  I changed the photo of my original post and I was able to tweak the summary/description of the tweet without using all of the 140 characters!

So I hope this helps you Squarespace users get more clicks and traffic to your site! For Wordpress users, I believe there is are two plugins that helps you with implementing twitter cards. Click here or here
